posted a challenge: Paint Jareth, the Goblin King, but don't try to make him look like David Bowie.
Of course, the goblins heard, and ran about and rushed into walls and then finally told Jareth who immediately had them summon me to his court. (I won't talk about the methods they used to convince me, as I'm still trying to wash out some of the stains). Jareth, it seems, was tired of me writing about him and was insisting on a Royal Portrait showing him in all of his true glory (all respect to Bowie, he says, but the man's makeup was just a little too 80's for him, the physical resemblance was close, but the filmmakers *are* only human).
I tried to explain that I have a calendar to think about, and commissions to contact people about, and a CGtalk challenge to work on, and a million other things I OUGHT to be doing... But he was rather persuasive. And I admit, I have a hard time saying "no" to Jareth. Something about the creature just makes me itch to paint/write/drool.

Jareth, Labyrinth, etc are copyright Jim Henson, of course. As much as such creatures can be.
i love this picture. it's very different, yet still capture's Jerith's essence. Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies, and this makes my crazy fan-ness that much better. thanx!

Wow.....this picture makes me want to go watch The Labryinth, right now. And let me tell you...that movie FREAKED me out when I was young...and still does to some degree.. (I've got a younger brother, and I always felt terrible when I thought bad thoughts about him after watching this...)
That hair is amazing! I seriously think it's some of the best you've done. The rough texture is different from what you normally do, and wow, you pulled it off! You did a better job, IMO of capturing the fluffy quality of hair in this picture.
The glint of gold on the sleeves really catches my eye. Your attention to detail always makes for such a beautiful overall composition.
Ah, and his pose. This guy is hot.

What happens once in a minute, twice in a moment, and never in a thousand years?
This is one of those wonderful paintings that pretty much paint themselves. I was worried, on several points, and the hair was one of those things that just happened and happened right.
I was worried he looked too much like Bowie, (even though I was staying away from pictures of him when I was working on the face so as not to be unduly influenced), but I think, (as Jareth claims) the resemblance is merely that: a vague resemblance.
His hair was going to be blonde, because Jareth's hair just IS. It was going to be wild for the same reason. He was going to be incredibly sexy, wear black, and gloves, and have a high collar, because that's just who he is and what he likes.
I didn't think too much when sketching it, just let it kind of happen. Didn't think too much while painting it either (except for trying to get his arms right). It really felt like painting a real person, who only happens to be real inside my head.
